Institutions of the Diocese
Several Southland nonsectarian social-service providers, along with the spiritually focused Stillpoint organization, are recognized by Diocesan Convention as official affiliated institutions of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. These institutions are separately incorporated 501(c)3 non-profit organizations and, while eligible for diocesan grants, are self-funded apart from the annual diocesan budget. In accordance with diocesan canons, each institution provides its annual audit to the Secretary of Convention. Through the years, two longtime diocesan institutions, Good Samaritan Hospital (founded in 1885 by Episcopal nun Sister Mary Wood) and St. Barnabas Senior Services (founded as 1908 as the City Mission Society) have, due respectively to a corporate merger and secular funding considerations, discontinued their affiliation as diocesan institutions yet continue cordial ties with Episcopalians in the region.
