Bishop John Harvey Taylor today announced his appointment of Canon Dan Valdez – Episcopal Community Federal Credit Union board president whose terms on Diocesan Council included membership on the joint finance committee – to serve as interim treasurer of the Diocese of Los Angeles.
Valdez, a longtime lay leader at All Saints Church in Highland Park who has represented the diocese as a seven-time deputy to General Convention, succeeds Canon Andy Tomat, who served as treasurer for eight years before stepping down in November during Diocesan Convention’s annual meeting. Valdez will continue in this role to bridge the transition to the administration of Bishop-elect Antonio Gallardo set to begin July 11, 2026.
“Canon Valdez brings amazing gift to this transitional ministry – financial, pastoral, and indeed prophetic, as a long-time leader of our credit union, an economic justice ministry,” Taylor said. “He has worked with scores of our missions and parishes and knows their stories well. His counsel will be vital as we prepare to hand management of the diocese’s finances over to the bishop-elect and his team.”
“I am grateful for Bishop Taylor’s invitation to serve as treasurer on an interim basis,” Valdez said. “I’ve worked with a multitude of churches and institutions going back to the final years of Bishop Fred Borsch’s episcopate, and I have been a member of Diocesan Council for at least as many years. I’m also grateful for our former treasurer, Canon Andy Tomat, having reimagined the reporting structure and the Rev. Susan Stanton’s pledge of support from her and our talented finance team.”
An accounting professional who has served numerous Episcopal congregations and nonprofit organizations, Valdez was named an honorary canon of the diocese by Taylor during November’s annual meeting of Diocesan Convention.
