This is part of a series of question-and-answer columns from the Bishop Search Committee. Wondering what’s going on? Looking for details? Ask the committee by submitting questions here.

Q. When will the Transitions Committee be announced?

A. The committee will be announced the week of May 5. The committee will meet May 3 for an organizing retreat.

Q. What does the Transitions Committee do?

A. Their work covers four principal areas:

  • To introduce the candidates to the diocese — and the diocese to the candidates. It will be the job of Transitions to offer additional information about the candidates from time to time between the announcement of the slate in September and the election on Nov. 8. It will also be their job to provide information about the diocese and help the candidates get to know the area and the culture of the diocese.
  • They’ll arrange the Meet-and-Greet sessions around the diocese the week of Oct. 20. These sessions will offer times when parishioners can come hear from the candidates and ask questions. The format of these sessions and the locations will be decided soon. Please stand by for those details.
  • At Diocesan Convention in Riverside on Nov. 8, the Transitions Committee will assist other convention organizers with the election of the new bishop.
  • Then Transitions will work on arranging a smooth transition into the diocese for the bishop-elect and family, and will work with the diocesan staff and the Consecration Committee on the consecration on July 11, 2026.

Q. What else do the candidates do while they’re here for the Meet-and-Greets?

A. Typically candidates want to see as much of the region as possible, visit some ministries, and see the good work happening in this diocese. They’ll also visit diocesan offices and see the Cathedral. Transitions will map out an itinerary that gives them a taste of the richness and diversity of the Diocese of Los Angeles.
