Marge and Sherm Telleen met in the early fifties as freshmen at Stanford but didn’t date until their senior year. It finally took, because they were married for 73 years.
Marge died in October. Sherm will never be over that. But he fills his days with his daily swim, except Sunday, when he goes to the early service at his beloved The Church of Our Saviour, plenty of time with family living nearby, and the occasional card game with friends.
With Marge a lifelong supporter of the The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, Sherm also served for many years on our Diocesan Investment Trust. When we had coffee at the MonteCedro on Monday, he said, reprising his eulogy at Marge’s celebration of life service at COS, that in adulthood, he had one spouse, one job (as a financial executive), and two houses — although his retiring in his early sixties enabled them to get to 100 countries. Asked for the secret of life, his answer was basically have faith and don’t sweat the small stuff.
My rounds early in the week included chats with our bishop-elect, the Rev. Dr. Antonio Gallardo, at our hang at Norm’s in Pico Rivera, and the Rev. Bryan Jones, an innovative priest and former St. Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church/ San Lucas de las Montañas vicar who has been courageously enduring a series of health setbacks. That’s he with his son, Sean.
