Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, O God, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Homeless people are enduring dangerously cold weather

[Spectrum News 1 – Jan. 10, 2024] With temperatures in Los Angeles dropping into the 40s for several consecutive nights, much of the city’s homeless population has had to endure the cold weather out on the streets.

Larry Rust is one of the over 46,000 homeless people in the city of LA, and he said the recent cold weather has made life especially difficult for him and his neighbors.

“Right now it’s like 49 degrees. We’re going into lower weather than that. That’s freezing temperature weather. We are freezing out here,” Rust said.

In 2021, at least 14 homeless people died of hypothermia in LA.
