Gracious God, who asks much of those with the courage to persevere: When Sherry Harris, born on this date in 1957, won her race for the Seattle City Council in 1991, she became the first out lesbian of African descent elected to public office in the United States. Sherry was three pioneers in one as our nation continued to make its way to pluralism out of the shadows of male, white, and heterosexual supremacy. We give you thanks for Sherry and all in public life who struggle for political representation that reflects the magnificent diversity of your face and our communities. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
