I’m at LAX en route the Dominican Republic, where the House of Bishops is having its autumn meeting beginning tomorrow. The Dominican Republic is one of 22 countries in The Episcopal Church. Our host, the Rt. Rev. Moises Quezada Mota, is my friend from bishops’ orientation programs many years ago. We’ve wanted to meet in his diocese for years, but circumstances and logistics did their thing until now.

Bishops’ spouses are invited in the fall, a return to a longstanding practice interrupted by the pandemic. But I’m pressing on alone since Kathy had a prior commitment to babysit in New York for our two-month-old grandson Emmett James O’Connor, whom she hasn’t met yet. I’d like to tell you that we flipped a coin to resolve the scheduling conflict. If we had done so, we’d have had to keep flipping until she got the right answer.

I’ll be on the road until Sept. 16, with the people of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles ever in my prayers.
