Canon Percia Hutcherson, a physical therapist and longtime medical missionary in Eldoret, Kenya, died Jan. 9 at her home in Los Angeles. She was 95, and had been in ill health for several years.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at Christ the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 3303 W. Vernon Avenue, Los Angeles 90008 (323.295.4139).
In addition to her extensive work in Kenya, Hutcherson was instrumental in the building of Good Shepherd Homes, an apartment complex for residents with physical disabilities that was sponsored by her home parish of Christ the Good Shepherd, Los Angeles, and the Diocese of Los Angeles. Bishop Frederick Borsch named her a lay canon of the diocese in 1997.
Her life story was told in the book Every Little Bit: The Remarkable Life of Percia Hutcherson, written by the late Canon Ruth Nicastro, retired diocesan missioner for communications and editor of The Episcopal News, and published in 2003 by Cathedral Center Press.
