September 16, 1926 – April 1, 2011
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at St. Margaret’s Church, Palm Desert, for Frank V. Marshall, Jr., who served the Diocese of Los Angeles as its treasurer and a five-time deputy to General Convention. Marshall died April 1 at age 84 in Palm Desert. He is survived by six children, three stepchildren, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Marshall retired as treasurer of the diocese in 1988 after 12 years of service. Upon moving to Palm Desert, he became active in serving St. Margaret’s Parish, part of the Diocese of San Diego. There in semi-retirement Marshall started an insurance counseling business, building on his many years as president of Charter Insurance Agency in Los Angeles.
Before moving to the desert full time, Marshall was an active parishioner of St. Matthew’s, Pacific Palisades. Previously he served as senior warden at St. Augustine’s by-the-Sea, Santa Monica, and chaired the building committee for its present complex after the 1966 fire that destroyed the earlier landmark church. In 1958 Marshall became a licensed lay reader. He was a delegate to Diocesan Convention from St. Matthew’s for 30 years.
Marshall served elected terms on the Standing Committee, Diocesan Council and Corporation of the Diocese. He served six years on the board of directors of the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief, now Episcopal Relief & Development. Long active in the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, an Episcopal men’s group, he chaired its national council for 12 years. In addition, he was a longstanding Rotary member and Boy Schout leader.
Marshall was born September 16, 1926, in Pasadena. He graduated from the Midland School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman. At UCLA he was a Phi Delta Theta fraternity member.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Marshall’s memory to the Camper Scholarship Fund at Camp Stevens, P. O. Box 2320, Julian, CA 92036.
