The Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor issued the following statement to the Diocese of Los Angeles after a jury convicted former police office Derek Chauvin of murdering George Floyd on May 25, 2020.
Most of all, may today’s verdict affirming that Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd enable Mr. Floyd’s family and friends to receive some measure of comfort and peace. I invite all in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles to keep them in our prayers as well as the people of Minneapolis and all who have been victims of racism and oppression.
After Mr. Floyd’s murder in May 2020, tens of millions all over the United States raised their voices in outrage because of this and other instances of unjust police violence against Black people and other people of color. Millions said as one: “Black Lives Matter.” The road to reform will be longer than we might wish, as Daunte Wright’s April 11 killing in Brooklyn Center made so heartbreakingly clear. Yet both in the media and in the courtroom, many representatives of law enforcement deplored former officer Chauvin’s actions. May their witness signal a turning point for our country as we devise models of law enforcement rooted in wholeness, healing, safety, and justice for all.
In our diocese, the Bishop’s Commission on Gospel Justice and Community Safety has taken as its mission to articulate a Christ-centered vision of community safety, assess the relationship between residents and law enforcement in our neighborhoods in all six counties, and advocate for reform locally, regionally, and nationally. Please keep the commission in your prayers tonight during our fifth monthly meeting, and our first with Sister Patricia Sarah Terry as chair, including by using the prayer Presiding Bishop Michael Curry commended to the church this afternoon:
O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Más que todo, que el veredicto del día de hoy que afirma que Derek Chauvin asesinó a George Floyd le permita a la familia Floyd y a sus amistades recibir de alguna manera paz y consuelo. Les invito a todos y a todas en la Diócesis Episcopal de Los Ángeles a mantenerlos en nuestras oraciones, así como a las personas de Minneapolis y todos aquellos y aquellas que han sido víctimas del racismo y la opresión.
Después del asesinato del Sr. Floyd en mayo del 2020, decenas de millones alrededor de los Estados Unidos levantaron sus voces con indignación debido a esto y a otras más situaciones del uso injusto de violencia por parte de la policía hacia personas negras y de otras personas de color. Millones de personas dijeron al unísono: “Las Vidas Negras Importan”. Como lo dejó tan claro, el asesinato de Daunte Wright el 11 de abril en el Centro de Brooklyn, el camino hacia la reforma quizás sea más largo de lo que quisiéramos. Sin embargo, tanto en los medios de comunicación como en la sala del juzgado, muchos representantes de los cuerpos de seguridad condenaron las acciones del exoficial Chauvin. Que su testimonio sea un momento decisivo para nuestro país a medida que concebimos modelos de cuerpos policiales que se encuentren enraizados en la plenitud, sanación, seguridad y justicia para todos.
En nuestra diócesis, la Comisión del Obispo de Justicia del Evangelio y Seguridad de la Comunidad ha adoptado como su misión el articular una visión Cristo céntrica de seguridad de la comunidad y el evaluar la relación entre los residentes y los cuerpos policiales en todos nuestros vecindarios en nuestros seis condados y así abogar por una reforma tanto local, regional y nacional. Favor de mantener a la comisión en sus oraciones esta noche durante nuestra quinta reunión mensual, y nuestra primera reunión con la Hermana Patricia Sarah Terry como su presidenta, utilizando la oración que el Obispo Primado Michael Curry le encomendó a la Iglesia esta tarde:
Oh Dios, nos has unido en una vida común. Ayúdanos, en medio de nuestras luchas por la justicia y la verdad, a confrontarnos sin odio ni amargura, y a trabajar juntos con paciencia y respeto mutuos; a través de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.
