The Gathering: A Space for Asian-American Spirituality will meet on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Japanese American National Museum for “Behind Barbed Wire: Keeping Children Safe and Families Together.”
The Gathering is among the sponsoring organizations of the event, which marks the Day of Remembrance, the 77th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, by which President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent some 120,000 Japanese-Americans into concentration camps.
“Every year the refrain ‘Never again’ is repeated over and over to try and educate and prevent this shameful abrogation of civil rights from recurring,” says the program announcement. “Yet, current events call upon us to stand up against racist hysteria against new immigrants. In fact, it is happening again. This year’s program will focus on the trauma of the past enacted against Japanese American families and the trauma of families separated at the border.”
