Ruth-Alice grew up in Pasadena where her parents managed the Mira Monte Hotel. She attended William McKinley Elementary and Middle School, then Pasadena Junior College (lower and upper division). She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California in February, 1944 and then served as a regional office manager for the National Automobile Club in Pasadena for 41 years. She remained active in the National Association of Insurance Women until 1996.

Ruth-Alice married Edward Hailwood at the Church of the Angels in Pasadena in May 1980 while he was vicar at Trinity Episcopal Church, Orange. The couple moved to Alhambra in 1982 when Ed became chaplain at the Kensington (The Episcopal Home), where he served until 1988. Ruth-Alice helped manage the store on the campus, Peggy’s Place, including keeping it stocked with special items requested by the residents. After Ed stepped down as chaplain, he and Ruth-Alice settled into the family house in Laguna Beach but continued commuting back to The Kensington where Ruth-Alice served on the board of managers and Ed worked in social service.

Beginning in 1995, Ruth-Alice and Ed began commuting to Seal Beach when Ed was named as vicar of St. Theodore’s Church, where he served until he died in 2006. Ruth-Alice was active in the church, serving in the Altar Guild and helping with social activities.

Ruth-Alice continued to commute to St. Theodore’s for a number of years thereafter and remained in Laguna Beach until 2016 when she moved into The Canterbury in Rancho Palos Verdes.
