The Rev. James Maronde, a clinical psychologist and director of St. Luke’s Outreach Center in Fontana, died Sept. 10 at age 75.
Survivors include his wife, Denise, and five adult children and their families. A private service was held by Maronde’s family, and the date for a memorial gathering, planned for St. Lukes’, Fontana, has not yet been announced.
At. St. Luke’s, Maronde provided spiritual direction for nearly a dozen 12-step meetings a week and offered a Wednesday-evening service of Holy Eucharist.
“His ministry brought comfort and guidance to many,” Bishop John Harvey Taylor said of Maronde, also noting his collaboration in building outreach partnerships in the local community. “He will be greatly missed.”
Before beginning ministry at St. Luke’s in 2011, Maronde served from 2005 to 2010 as priest-in-charge of St. Nicholas Church in Encino. Previously he was rector of St. Martin in the Fields, Winnetka, from 1985 to 1995, having assisted at St. Alban’s, Westwood, from 1978 to 1985.
A native Southern Californian raised in San Marino, Maronde was ordained to the diaconate in 1978 and the priesthood the following year by Bishop Robert C. Rusack. Maronde held a master’s of divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary in New York and a doctorate in clinical psychology from William Lyon University, San Diego.
