Heavenly God, we give you thanks for the fully lived life of Bessie Smith, who recorded “Downhearted Blues” on this day in 1923. Challenging norms and breaking barriers, she embodied the blues and helped inspire a century of popular music. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
