Sharing our freedom: thoughts on immigration
Setting out several weeks ago for my annual late-summer driving trip (five states, about 2,000 miles, with lots of beautiful vistas, good music, and frank talks with Jesus), I steered along Pearblossom Highway between Palmdale and Victorville and thought about my visit to the high desert just a few weeks before.

Bishop’s Dinner slated for Nov. 3
Noted author and church historian Diana Butler Bass will be the featured speaker at the gala Nov. 3 Bishop’s Dinner at St. John’s Cathedral, 514 W. Adams, Los Angeles. Andrew Leek, CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital, is guest of honor. Proceeds will be earmarked to benefit a variety of diocesan ministries, according to the Rev. Lorenzo Lebrija, diocesan development officer.

Preparations are underway for Diocesan Convention: Theme is ‘Come home, EDLA’
As the fall season begins, preparations are under way for Diocesan Convention, meeting Friday – Saturday, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 meeting of Diocesan Convention at the Ontario Convention Center.

New diocesan website set to launch
A new diocesan website is scheduled to go live starting Sept. 12 with enhancements to be added in subsequent weeks.

Bishop Morales of Puerto Rico to visit Los Angeles
The diocesan community is invited to a special bilingual (English/Spanish) Eucharist at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at St. John’s Cathedral, Los Angeles, to celebrate an official visit from Bishop Rafael Luis Morales of Puerto Rico. Morales will be in the Diocese of Los Angeles Sept. 24 – 27.

‘Sacred and Profane’ is topic of ‘Gathering’ for Asian-American Episcopalians
The Gathering — a Space for Asian American Spirituality — will meet 11 a.m.  – 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Japanese American National Museum for a program on “The Sacred and the Profane: Spirituality of the World War II Japanese American Incarceration.”

Following the way of Jesus: A report from the 2018 meeting of General Convention
Responding to Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s call to “Follow the Way of Jesus,” deputies and bishops at the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, meeting July 5 – 13 in Austin, Texas, acted on a record number of resolutions on key issues such as immigration, prayer book revision, Israel-Palestine, and readmitting the Episcopal Church of Cuba as a diocese.

Living in service: EUIP expands to Echo Park
After college graduation and various internships, Siobhan O’Brien, 24, still was seeking “something more, something interactive, to help me grow and develop” when she applied for the Episcopal Urban Intern Program (EUIP) in Los Angeles.

Interfaith interns build relationships, share stories, create community
Tasneem Noor, Sable Manson and Tahil Sharma — interfaith interns for the Diocese of Los Angeles — say they hope to bridge faith and culture divides by sharing the stories of those both inside and outside the mainstream.

Seminarian Shawn Evelyn: Answering the call to serve
For much of Shawn Evelyn’s young life, friends and family members observed his active participation in ministries, both at St. John’s and St. Philip’s in Los Angeles, and advised him to pursue priestly ordination.
