Rowan Williams, 104tn Archbishop of Canterbury
A DISTINGUISHED GUEST at the 100th anniversary of St. Mary’s Church in Palms, Los Angeles, will be the Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams, 104th archbishop of Canterbury, who retired from that post in 2012. Williams will celebrate and preach at a “pontifical high Mass” on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.
Other centennial events include a solemn Evensong and Benediction at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Eucharist celebrated by Bishop John Harvey Taylor, bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles. Refreshments will follow each event. Clergy: Gold or festive stole.
St. Mary’s is located at 3647 Watseka Avenue, Los Angeles 90034. Additional parking will be available between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at First Lutheran Church, 3751 Hughes Avenue, Los Angeles.
Rowan D. Williams is a noted scholar, theologian and poet. Before his 2002 – 2012 tenure as archbishop of Canterbury he was bishop of Monmouth and archbishop of Wales, and an academic at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. He currently is master of Magdalene College at Cambridge and chancellor of the University of South Wales. He was named a life baron in 2013, and as Baron Williams of Oystermouth serves as a member of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords.
