John A. Tucker, Jr.

Canon John A. Tucker, Jr. — a longtime vice chancellor and lay leader of the Diocese of Los Angeles — died April 9 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80.
Tucker is survived by his brother, Dr. Guy Tucker (Marilyn) of Oahu, his sister, Marcia Tucker of Los Angeles, and a nephew, Matthew Tucker (Sara) of Boulder, Colorado.
Requiem Eucharist will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 at St. Matthew’s Church, 1031 Bienveneda, Pacific Palisades, where Tucker was active as an usher and in other volunteer capacities.
In addition to serving as a vice chancellor of the Diocese, Tucker was for many years a director of the Corporation of the Diocese and served as its president. He chaired the Diocesan Convention Committee on Constitution and Canons, and he served on the boards of Episcopal Home Communities and the Bishop Stevens Foundation. To each of these offices he brought his skill as an attorney specializing in real estate and estate planning.
In recognition of his decades of service to the Diocese, Tucker was named an honorary canon of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in 1997.
As a boy, Tucker was an acolyte at St. Alban’s Church in Westwood. He later attended All Saints’ Church, Beverly Hills, where he served multiple terms as as senior warden. He was also a member and officer of the Beach Club of Los Angeles.
John Tucker was born May 2, 1932, in Los Angeles. He attended Stanford University and served in the U.S. Air Force, after which time he worked in Washington, D.C., in senate and congressional offices.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or to St. Matthew’s Parish School’s financial aid fund.
