To all the faithful in Christ Jesus in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles:
I, John Harvey Taylor, by Divine Providence Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, grant permission for Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, beloved by many of our faithful, to continue his service and ministry within the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. I recognize the important role this figure has played in both the spiritual life and liturgical practices of our people, especially during the Advent and Christmas seasons.
As you know, Saint Nicholas, with his rich history of compassion, generosity, and care for all, offers a powerful witness to the Gospel of Christ. His example encourages us to walk in the path of mercy and love, which, in our diverse and vibrant diocese, continues to resonate deeply with people of all ages.
In accordance with an ancient custom of the Church, I hereby grant permission for this saintly figure to serve in our diocese. Historically, it is the prerogative of the diocesan bishop to permit the presence and ministry of another bishop within their diocese, and I am pleased to continue this tradition by authorizing Saint Nicholas to participate in the activities of our diocese. This includes pastoral visits, seasonal celebrations, and appropriate liturgical observances. His ministry will be extended through the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, 2025. This period will allow our communities to fully experience the joy, generosity, and hope that Saint Nicholas embodies.
I also encourage you and your congregation to learn more about the life and ministry of Saint Nicholas. Resources from The Saint Nicholas Center (www.stnicholascenter.org) offer a wealth of information about his legacy, his life as a bishop, and the many ways he continues to inspire Christians around the world. You may choose to use the many resources available through the Center to celebrate at home, church and in community. Understanding his deep commitment to the poor, the orphaned, and the needy can help us more fully appreciate the spirit of his ministry in our own time.
I am particularly pleased to note that Saint Nicholas is especially eager to visit the church in our diocese which bears his name, St. Nicholas of Myra in Encino. I trust that his presence will bring abundant joy and deepen our faithful witness. May his visit be a blessing and a sign of hope for all!
I hope that you will join me in welcoming Bishop Saint Nicholas of Myra to the Diocese of Los Angeles.
Given under my hand and seal in the city of Los Angeles, on the sixth day of December in the eighth year of my consecration.
