Almighty God, Dietrich Bonhoeffer opposed Hitler from the beginning, gave his life to undermine and oppose him, and preached that in an unjust world, the church’s vocation was to suffer as your son did. On this 77th anniversary of his martyrdom, on the brink of Holy Week, when we will again imagine a world where the light of Christ’s justice and love is annihilated forever, “deliver us from the presumption of coming to your Table for solace only, and not for strength, for pardon only, and not for renewal.” Keep us faithful and strong for whatever challenges await. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
