Bishop John Harvey Taylor offers clarification to City of Los Angeles churches;
will offer digital Morning Prayer service on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. On behalf of Bishop Bruce, Canon McCarthy, and all of us at St. Paul’s Commons, I assure you of our unceasing prayers as you devote yourself to being safe and keeping others safe while continuing the work of the gospel throughout the Diocese of Los Angeles.

In addition to the guidelines I provided yesterday, I draw the attention of leaders of our congregations in the City of Los Angeles to Mayor Eric Garcetti’s order to city departments, which contains a restriction on non-essential official gatherings for 50 or more. Many have reported or read this as applying to community events such as church services. It does not. I make this point for the sake of clarity and not to minimize the need to take the greatest possible care when calling people together.

Throughout the diocese, many of our churches have decided to suspend worship. Many will be open, in most cases with curtailed or modified programs. I have the greatest possible faith in our parish and mission leaders as they attend both to the instructions of state and local health officials and people’s spiritual and practical needs. Even if they suspend regular services for the time being, congregational leaders have the discretion to keep churches open for meditation, spoken Morning Prayer services, or pastoral conversations while scrupulously observing best practices regarding hygiene and social distancing (no touch; stay six feet apart). Those who feel sick or who are over 60 with complex care needs should stay home.

For the duration of the crisis, we have the responsibility to remain in community in the name of Jesus Christ, using remote technology if necessary. You can learn how to live-stream a service from any location here.

This Sunday, March 15 at 10 a.m., if you’re not able to be in church, please join me on-line for a service of Morning Prayer with homily (not too long, I promise!). To view the service, click here. (It’s the diocesan Facebook page, but you don’t need to be a Facebook member to watch.)
