Ready to walk the way of love

Like all people, Episcopalians are creatures of habit, though perhaps a little more so. Our unofficial motto, of course, is “we’ve always done it that way.” And yet this November, as we head to convention, we’re experiencing substantial shifts in both space and time.

‘Lifelong Way of Love’ is theme of Diocesan Convention Nov. 15 – 16

Meeting in Riverside will feature lecture by Dolores Huerta, presentation by Street Symphony’s Benjamin Shirley

Delegates and visitors to this year’s Diocesan Convention, Nov. 15 – 16 at the Riverside Convention Center, will find plenty to enlighten and inspire, including a lecture delivered by civil rights legend Dolores Huerta and a presentation by Benjamin Shirley, a celebrated composer who once was homeless on the streets of Los Angeles and now works with Street Symphony to bring music to the underprivileged poor of the city.

Los Angeles Bishop Diocesan John Harvey Taylor on October 22 welcomed more than a hundred well-wishers to the official dedication and open house of St. Paul’s Commons in Echo Park. Formerly known as the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, the facility will continue to function as headquarters for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, as well as a retreat, conference and resource center, Taylor told the gathering.

Bookstore is part of her, says manager Mini Hipolito, but it’s time to let it go

Herminia “Mini” Hipolito paused recently to reflect on her more than three decades of ringing up sales and dishing up motherly advice to laity, bishops and clergy customers at the Cathedral Bookstore at St. Paul’s Commons in Echo Park.

Cathedra, bishop suffragan’s chair move to St. John’s Cathedral

The historic cathedra of the Bishop of Los Angeles and original chair of the Bishop Suffragan of Los Angeles journeyed Oct. 18 to St. John’s Cathedral, taking their places near the high altar after 25 years in Echo Park at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, now St. Paul’s Commons.

Bloy House will move to Lutheran Center in Glendale

Bishop John Harvey Taylor, Dean Sylvia Sweeney and members of the Bloy House board of trustees joined Bishop Guy Erwin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Southwest California Synod to sign a lease agreement for the Episcopal seminary — formally known as Episcopal School of Theology at Claremont or ETSC — to move into offices at ELCA’s Lutheran Center in Glendale.

‘God is never finished transforming us’: St. Be’s launches with a party for hundreds

“ST. Be’s” official launched Sept. 28 with several hundred guests enjoying live music, hip-hop and R&B line dancing, children’s games, origami crafts, tacos and samples from the Hope Ice Cream Truck.

Churches are mothers nurturing new birth, Rowan Williams tells centennial celebration at St. Mary in Palms Church, Los Angeles

The Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams, 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, invoked the image of congregations as “mothering churches, places where new birth happens” while preaching Sept. 22 to an overflow gathering at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Parish of St. Mary in Palms.
